Our Director

Our DirectorJudy Cooper-MacLaren grew up in a musical family--her dad was first violinist with the Winnipeg Junior Symphony while in high school--and sang and harmonized with her three sisters...they actually had their own quartet before Judy ever knew about Sweet Adelines! Judy studied music in college, and sang with various jazz ensembles, choirs, and performing groups there and in high school. Judy always loved performing in musicals, and had cast parts in Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, and South Pacific.

Judy joined Sweet Adelines in 1992 in Spokane, WA, where her first chorus was Spokane Falls Chorus (now called Spirit of Spokane). After moving to Seattle in 1995, Judy joined Seattle Shores, and has been on their board of directors, and acted as assistant director and choreographer. Judy has sung every voice part except bass--she’s still waiting for that lower register to kick in--but tenor is her “true love”. Judy has also sung with various quartets, both competing and non-competing.

In her professional life, Judy works as a Clinical Research Coordinator specializing in asthma and allergies. She is married to Larry and they have three wonderful daughters and one grand-daughter.

Our Assistant Director

According to Bonnie Jean Massey's mother, Seattle Shores' Assistant Director has been singing and dancing since before she could walk! Bonnie Jean and her sister would put on plays with the other children in the neighborhood, and growing up she took music and dance lessons, sang in the choirs at school and attended as many concerts possible.

Bonnie Jean graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma with a degree in Music Education and has taught every phase of music to children through adult. Currently, Bonnie Jean teaches music and drama to preschool children...we just have too much fun!

Bonnie Jean joined Sweet Adelines when her children were small in order to have some adult interaction and continue her love of singing. Bonnie Jean says, "Little did I know that singing would take me to so many places in this world, provide so many incredible friends and create so many wonderful memories."

Our President

Barbara joined the Seattle Shores Chorus in 2007, and she was thrilled to be able to join us on a trip to Jamestown, Virginia to celebrate the 400th anniversary of its founding.  Since that time, she has served on the Board of Directors as Recording Secretary and Vice President. She is a member of the quartet Seattle Sound, composed of Bonnie Jeanne Massey, Bonnie Willis, Judy Cooper, and herself.

Barbara is a native Washingtonian who has been singing in choirs all of her life. She also loves performing in theater and musical productions. Barbara has been in many musicals produced by local community groups. Her home is in Lynnwood, where she lives with her husband Seth, and sons Jordan and Jonathan. When she is not performing, Barbara loves to travel and scuba dive. She works at a pathology laboratory in Edmonds as a medical transciptionist.

Judy directs the chorus

Judy says, “Sweet Adelines has been an amazing addition to my life, giving me strengths and opportunities that may not have been available otherwise. I was blessed to have my two oldest daughters join the chorus a few years ago and it's a wonderful feeling to sing on the risers with your own kids! Now, having a chance to direct has opened another door and I'm excited to take on this challenge.”
